Lennox Capacitor Replacement: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

A Lennox capacitor replacement in Los Angeles typically runs $175 – $420 installed, parts and labor included. We stock Lennox-compatible capacitors on our trucks for same-day service across most of the city, from Encino to Echo Park. Most homeowners discover the problem the same way: the outdoor unit hums but the fan won’t spin, or the compressor clicks and gives up. That’s a capacitor doing exactly what capacitors do when they fail, and it’s one of the most common AC repairs we make in Los Angeles heat.

If your Lennox system is dead on a 95-degree afternoon and you’re standing next to a humming condenser, you already know something’s wrong. The question is what, and whether it’s worth fixing. It usually is.

Which Lennox Models This Applies To

Lennox uses capacitors across nearly every residential line: the Merit series (ML14, ML17), Elite series (EL16, EL18, EL296), and Signature series (XC13, XC16, XC20, XC21, XC25, SLP98V furnaces). The part itself isn’t exotic. Most Lennox condensers use a dual-run capacitor rated between 35/5 and 80/10 MFD (microfarads), with voltage ratings of 370 or 440 VAC. The number is printed right on the side of the cylinder, and you can read it yourself if you’re comfortable opening the panel. If you’re not, don’t. We’ll get to that.

One compatibility gotcha we see constantly: Lennox often specs a 440 VAC capacitor even when a 370 would technically work, because it holds up better under sustained high ambient temperatures. In Los Angeles, where a condenser on an apartment rooftop in Koreatown or a west-facing wall in Sherman Oaks bakes all afternoon, that margin matters. A cheap 370 from a big-box store will fail again in a season or two. We stock OEM-spec Lennox capacitors and quality aftermarket equivalents from AmRad and Titan HD, same electrical ratings, same footprint. For a Lennox system, we default to OEM ratings unless the model is old enough that the original part number has been superseded.

A quick note on affiliation: Brandt HVAC is an independent service provider. We’re not a Lennox dealer or factory store. That’s actually why we can be blunt about what’s worth putting in your unit and what isn’t.

Signs Your Lennox Capacitor Replacement Is Failing

  • The outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn’t turn. This is the classic. The capacitor can’t supply the starting torque to spin the fan motor, so the motor just buzzes and overheats. If you hear this, shut the system off at the thermostat and the breaker before the motor burns out.
  • The AC takes longer to cool the house. A weak capacitor means the compressor isn’t running at full speed or is struggling to start. Your system might still produce cool air, but it’s laboring, and that labor is showing up on your electric bill.
  • You hear a clicking sound from the condenser, then nothing. The compressor tries to start, pulls current, the capacitor can’t hold the charge, and the system shuts down on thermal overload. In a Los Angeles heat wave, this cycle can repeat every few minutes.
  • The capacitor casing is swollen, split, or leaking oil. We see this on units that have been in direct sun for years, no shade, no maintenance. The heat breaks down the dielectric fluid inside, pressure builds, and the can bulges. Once it’s visibly deformed, it’s done.
  • The system runs but blows warm air. If the fan capacitor fails separately while the compressor keeps running, the compressor will quickly overheat and trip its safety. You might get a few minutes of cool air before it shuts off.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, a Lennox capacitor replacement from Brandt HVAC runs $175 – $420 installed, and that includes the part, the labor, and the written guarantee. Common single capacitors on older Merit-series units sit at the lower end. Dual-run capacitors on newer Signature-series equipment, or units that need both the compressor and fan capacitor replaced at the same time, land higher. We tell you the exact price before any work starts, in writing, and you approve it before we open the panel.

The price includes a visual inspection of the contactor and wiring while we’re in there, because a capacitor rarely fails in isolation. If the contactor is pitted, on a Lennox the two parts are often replaced together since the labor’s already done. The repair is guaranteed for 365 days under the Done Right Promise. If the capacitor fails within that year, we return at no charge. No argument, no trip fee, no second invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

Honest answer: a capacitor stores enough electrical charge to stop your heart if you touch the wrong terminals, even with the power off. I’m not going to write a step-by-step guide for something that sends a homeowner to the emergency room when it goes wrong. What you can safely do: confirm the system is off at the thermostat, check the breaker, and visually inspect the capacitor through the condenser grille or after removing the access panel only if you’re certain the disconnect is off and you know how to verify it. If you see a bulged or leaking cap, you’ve found your problem. That’s worth knowing before you call, because it means the repair is likely quick.

What we’d rather you not do: discharge the capacitor yourself with a screwdriver, guess at a replacement from an online marketplace, or install a part without confirming the MFD and voltage ratings exactly match the Lennox spec. Wrong rating, early failure. Short across the terminals, hospital visit. If you’ve got doubts, call (984) 538-9003. We’ll send a technician you know by name and photo before they arrive, with a badge shown at your door.
